The Moment

"midsummer night's dream

dashed and I saw stars,

blinking

signals end of love."

My first assignment in Design 100 is to create 3 original posters which all must convey the message of a haiku - a Japanese poem of my own choice. This is my second poster (a movie poster) which I created by drawing and outlining on paper then coloring and editing in Photoshop. As in the previous poster, the triangle shaped played a big part in my composition, I decided to use the same triangle form in the center of the design as a sense of continuity and familiarity. For colors choice, I made use of light purple and black shade because to me these are the most suitable colors for expressing the idea of the dream as it is usually hazy and unclear. Additionally, these two dark and light colors also bring high contrast to my design. In this poster, I want to put emphasis on the act of “dashed” and realization (“blinking”, “signals”) so I included figures running and focused on facial expression. In order to magnify the sense of scale and perspective, I have increased the size of the character as she is running toward viewers. As for the movie title, I chose the name “You in my dream” but since my illustration is in the same style as Japanese cartoon style, I decided to translate the main title into Japanese (read from right to left so I put the title in the right corner to avoid confusion)and place the English version right underneath. When I did my research about anime movie posters, I also realized most of them focus on the image, movie title and the name of the director as no starring credits are needed so I did the same in my design. The design principles I have used are space/scale, gesture and hierarchy (weight and scale as well as color contrast)
