Poster 3

poster3.jpg

My first assignment in Design 100 is to create 3 original posters which all must convey the message of a haiku - a Japanese poem of my own choice. This is my third poster (a storyboard) which I created using pen on paper. Since this poster is solely a storyboard, I want to use just black and white to illustrate the story in the poem. The first key moment is the scene when the female protagonist starts dreaming about herself running away somewhere with her lover. Then, black shadows start appearing (which signifies bad omen), building up to the second key scene where the woman realizes her loved one is vanishing into the dark. The third key moment is when the male character has disappeared leaving only a streak of light falling in the woman's hand. This is meant to indicate the star in the haiku. The story ends with the last scene where the main character waking up realizing her lover is still there but with his back turned at her, giving off a feeling of coldness and ignorance. I intended to give the work a sense of unity/harmony so I created the same setting in the starting and beginning scene (two people on the bed). However, the feelings they give off contrast against each other so the emotions shift is much clearer. The design principles I have applied are line, contrast, hierarchy, radial and negative space.

The Moment

"midsummer night's dream

dashed and I saw stars,

blinking

signals end of love."
