Interact

Final Gif

Statement of Intent

For the last assignment of Design 240, we were assigned in pairs to create a simple interaction featuring one of the statistics we chose from UN goals. My teammate, Ben, and I decided to go with the topic "The ocean absorbs about 30 percent of carbon dioxide produced by humans", and with our final product, we hope to change users' view by making them realize the choices they make everyday can have major impact on the world. Using relatable, everyday activities, and objects, we let users click on different objects, and see the consequences of that action. Playing the role of art director, my goal is to create graphics that are aesthetic, and simple enough for the technical lead to work with. I also opted for the art style that is appealing to children and young teenagers as I believe this audience group is the most likely to be influenced by the interaction. Benjamin, as the technical lead, aims to give users a simple one click interaction so that they can interact with the scene in a more straightforward way. Additionally, consequences need to be seen so he achieved this by showcasing a sequence of images illustrating the worsening effects of the statistic, in which requires using a series of arrays and an arraylist.

Design Process

Each member of our team came up with 2 to 3 ideas during the brainstorming phase. Benjamin's initial idea was the "Pop the carbon to stop the ocean from being polluted interaction", and mine was the "Make a choice and see consequence" interaction (the bus or the car). However, we both later agreed that these concepts were either not impactful enough, or not directly linked to the ocean. We then did more studies on our own and came up with a final idea together.
